Lesson 12 – CODE OF CONDUCT – Humility

I.  KNIGHTHOOD REVIEW

A.  Vision for manhood – a man is someone who takes action (rejects passivity), accepts responsibility, leads courageously, and expects a greater reward – God’s reward

B.  Code of Conduct – how we act when nobody’s looking

C.  Lives for a higher cause – God’s glory

II. CODE OF CONDUCT – Humility: the mind of Christ

A. What is humility?

- Perhaps best understood by its opposite - pride

- Pride was behind the original sin (Gen. 3:5)

- Pride is associated with those who have no room for God (Psalm 10:4)

- Pride is putting ourselves first – self worship

- Humility is not a weakness, but rather a willingness to give up your own rights in order to benefit others, a Godly unwillingness to fight even when others are trying to pick a fight (Eph. 4:2)

B. God desires us to be humble

- God hates pride (Prov. 13:10, Prov. 16:5, Prov. 11:2, Prov. 18:12)

- We are to be submissive to others and clothed with humility (1 Peter 5:5)

C. Further perspectives

- All we have we receive from God

- As long as we are prideful we are not humble and sin against God

- We owe all we are to Christ, especially our salvation and the work that follows (Eph. 2:8-10)

III. APPLICATION

- Humility is not thinking less of yourself but thinking of yourself less

- Humility is not trying to make ourselves appear to be someone we are not

SCRIPTURE VERSES TO REMEMBER AND APPLY:

Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”

1 Peter 5:5
