Lesson 8 – CODE OF CONDUCT – Responsibility
I. KNIGHTHOOD REVIEW
A. Vision for manhood – a man is someone who takes action (rejects passivity), accepts responsibility, leads courageously, and expects a greater reward – God’s reward
B. Code of Conduct – how we act when nobody’s looking
C. Lives for a higher cause – God’s glory
II. CODE OF CONDUCT – Responsibility: demonstrating reliable conduct
A. A duty or task you are required or expected to do
i. Two types of responsibility:Personal responsibility – taking responsibility for our words, choices and actions
1.God and those in authority over us expect certain things of us
2. Learning those what those things are, doing them and owning up to it when we fail
3. Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32)
ii. Opportunity responsibility – when God gives you an opportunity (amount of time or situation) in which something can be done
1. God expects us to be responsible and take advantage of that opportunity
2. First Adam vs. Last Adam (Jesus)
B. Why responsibility is important to us:
i. Demonstration of personal responsibility builds trust and greater trust leads to:
1. Greater freedom
2. Greater opportunity
ii. God will not use us for His purposes before we demonstrate personally responsibility (Matt. 25:14-29)
iii. As children, our parents are responsible for us, but we grow in responsibility
iv. God has chosen to use His people in accomplishing His work on earth (Phil. 2:13)
C. How to become more responsible
i. Practice taking personal responsibility for or words, choices and actions
ii. Know God’s Word (the Bible) to help us recognize His will and the opportunities He gives us
IV. APPLICATION
i. Responsibility is a good thin as it allows us to glorify God and do more good for more people
ii. Begin with personal responsibility as a means to grow the trust of others
iii. Seek God through His Word to know His will and recognize His opportunities
iv. Trust in the Lord to work through you to accomplish the work He gave you
SCRIPTURE VERSES TO REMEMBER AND APPLY:
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. (Prov. 3:5-6)
