Lesson 1 – Introduction to Knights in Training (Part 1)

 

I. KNIGHTHOOD

 

a. Knights were given an honorary title and responsibility and would pledge themselves with a commitment to a:

 

i. Vision for manhood

 

ii. Code of Conduct

 

iii. Transcendent (timeless) Cause

 

b. Stages of becoming a knight:  Page -> Squire -> Knight

 

II. VISION FOR MANHOOD

 

a. Two models (Genesis 3, 1 Corinthians 15:45-58)

 

i. First Adam – life separated from God and based on human measures

 

ii. Second Adam (Christ) – life with God and influenced by spiritual direction

 

b. A real man rejects passivity (inactivity) – when nothing is the more comfortable and natural option

 

c. A real man accepts responsibility – he has:

 

i. a will to obey (God’s will as revealed in the Scriptures)

 

ii. a work to do (his job, in his home, in his church, in his community)

 

iii. and a woman to love (his wife)

 

d. A real man leads courageously – having the courage to lead with truth

 

e. A real man expects the greater reward – God’s spiritual reward, now and in eternity

 

f. Definition of a man – a man is someone who rejects passivity, accepts responsibility, leads courageously, and expects a greater reward – God’s reward

 

 

SCRIPTURE VERSES TO REMEMBER:

 

When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me. – 1 Corinthians 13:11

 

Be strong, act like a man, and observe what the Lord your God requires: Walk in obedience to him, and keep his decrees and commands, his laws and regulations, as written in the Law of Moses. Do this so that you may prosper in all you do and wherever you go.  – 1 Kings 2:2-3
